X has shared a first preview of what users will see if they are partially banned. The preview shows that these users can also appeal against a so-called ‘shadow ban’.

Andrea Conway, a designer at X, late in a tweet affected users may see a notification at the top of the notification tab, among other things. It says: “We’ve added a label to your account, which may be affecting your account reach.” Users can then request more information. Conway emphasizes that both the design and the text could still be adjusted.

The linked information page provides an explanation of why an account may have been shadowbanned. This may be related to posting violent, hateful or sexual content. This page contains links to X’s terms of use. At the bottom of the page you will also find a button to appeal against this decision.

Accounts that have been shadowbanned are limited in some way in their reach on the platform. For example, images may be automatically shielded and only shown to users with the explicit consent of users. Posts may also not be shown on the For You and Following timelines.

After taking over what was then Twitter, Elon Musk already announced a way for users to be informed about a possible ban. One of his criticisms of Twitter was that certain users were allegedly banned behind the scenes, but were not informed about this. Musk and some journalists tried to prove this phenomenon with the so-called Twitter Files.
