Version 4.40 beta of the archiving program 7-Zip has just been released. This open source program can handle the compression formats zip, cab, rar, arj, lzh, chm, gzip, bzip2, z, tar, cpio, rpm and deb, but is of course specialized in self-developed 7z format. With this format, they say a thirty to fifty percent better compression ratio can be achieved than with zip. Since version 4.31, there are separate versions for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows. The biggest innovation in this release is that some installation packages made with NSIS can now also be opened in 7-Zip. The full changelog looks like this:

Changes:

  • 7-Zip now can unpack some installers created by NSIS
  • New localization: Kurdish
  • Some bugs were fixed
