Microsoft releases test version of Paint with layers and PNG support
Microsoft is distributing a new test version of Paint, where the software supports layers and can open and save PNG images with transparent parts. Until now, that was not possible with the software.
Not all users in the Windows 11 Trial Insiders program will get the new version at the same time, Microsoft warns. The support of layers makes it possible to create more complex images in Paint. The function works by clicking Layers in the toolbar of the software. A panel will then appear on the right with layer management options, such as creating and deleting layers and switching their order. In addition, deleting part of an image now makes the part transparent, instead of white.
The functionality isn’t the only new thing in Microsoft’s basic graphics program. A week and a half ago it became apparent that Paint will have a function to remove the background from an image. By pressing the new button on the left of the toolbar, users can automatically remove the background from an image. It is also possible to select a specific part of the image with the selection tool, after which the background can be removed from only that part. It is still unknown when the new version of Paint will be released to the general public.
