Apple has released the iOS and iPadOS 15.7.9 operating system updates for older iPhones and iPads respectively. The update aims to address a zero-day vulnerability related to Pegasus spyware. The company also released macOS 11.7.10 and 12.6.9 for this.

Fix the applicable security updates according to Apple the zero-day vulnerability CVE-2023-41064, which until recently allowed remote installation of Pegasus spyware. The vulnerability was previously fixed for newer devices with iOS 16.6.1 and was discovered by research institute The Citizen Lab. The exploit would be actively exploited and, according to security researchers, could be abused without user input.

Operating system versions iOS 15.7.9, iPadOS 15.7.9 and macOS Big Sur 11.7.10 are intended for older Apple systems. For example, iOS 15.7.9 is available for all iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, first-generation iPhone SE, iPad Air 2, fourth-generation iPad mini, and seventh-generation iPod Touch devices.

It is not the first time that Apple has released a new operating system with security updates for devices that do not actually receive new operating systems. For example, in April the company released iOS and iPadOS 15.7.5 to fix a zero-day vulnerability.
