Sony is working on a method to let smartphones charge each other wirelessly

Sony has filed a patent application for a method to allow mobile devices to charge each other wirelessly. That can be two smartphones, but Sony also wants to use the method, for example, to have drones charge smartphones or vice versa.

To achieve this, the devices must have antennas on board to receive and send energy wirelessly. In addition, a graphical interface, presumably in the form of an app or setting, is needed to pair devices and control power transfer, Sony reports in its recently published patent application.

It remains unclear exactly how the energy transfer takes place, but it is presumably via the current methods of wireless charging, as can also be found in many models of smartphones and other devices. This is done by induction. This indicates that the devices must be close to each other, because induction only works at a short distance.

According to Sony, the technology can come in handy if, for example, two people do not have access to a charger, but the smartphone of one of the two is still full and that of the other is almost empty. Some phones can already charge other devices via a cable, but there is no way to do that wirelessly yet.

According to the manufacturer, Sony’s technology does not only work with smartphones, but with all kinds of portable electrical devices, such as drones and cameras.
