‘Graphics of smartphones at PS3 level within three years’
Imagination Technologies claims that mobile phones and smartphones will have the same graphics capabilities as the Playstation 3 in three years’ time. According to the maker of the PowerVR chip, the necessary chips are already under development.
Imagination Technologies told to Gizmodo that in three years the first phones are expected with a new chip, which is currently under development at the company. With the hardware from Imagination Technologies, mobiles get the graphical power of a PlayStation 3, the company claims. However, the chip would be limited to an output of 720p over HDMI, while the Sony console can handle 1080p. It is not known what name the new hardware will be given, but Imagination Technologies says it is a multiprocessor chipset.
In addition to announcing the new chipset, the hardware maker has also announced that the current range of products will receive additional functionality. The current PowerVR GPU, which runs in the iPhone and the Motorola Milestone, for example, is equipped with OpenCL-support to enable gpgpu. A software update for the PowerVR chip should also result in better performance in Flash applications, among other things.
