AMD has announced FreeSync 2. The second generation of the adaptive refresh technology supports HDR images and performs the tone mapping on the GPU to avoid lag as long as the game or video supports the technology.

Like the first generation FreeSync, FreeSync 2 ensures that the refresh rate of the monitor is adapted to the frame rate of the video card. In addition, there is support for HDR images, where the tone mapping can take place on the video card, instead of in the screen, which limits the latency. However, the game or video player must use AMD’s FreeSync 2 api for this. It is not yet known which software will receive support for FreeSync 2.

In terms of hardware, all AMD video cards that already support the first generation FreeSync will also have support for FreeSync 2. AMD has already announced that Samsung will release a monitor with FreeSync 2 support and AMD expects more manufacturers to enter the market. will follow in the first half of 2017.
