ProtonMail Claims Big Growth After It Was Found That Yahoo Hack Affected Billion Users
The e-mail service ProtonMail says the influx of new users has doubled since last week. That would be because Yahoo Mail users see ProtonMail as an alternative. Last week it was announced that the hack at Yahoo in 2013 involved one billion accounts.
ProtonMail does not say exactly how many users it gets. It does show a graph showing that the number of new users has doubled last week. The mail service points to the announcement that the hack at Yahoo’s mail service affected one billion users as the cause. Until last week it was unknown exactly how big the hack in 2013 was.
ProtonMail presents itself as a safe, free alternative to regular webmail services such as Yahoo Mail and Gmail. It also reported an increase in user numbers after it emerged last month that Donald Trump will be the next president of the United States.
ProtonMail’s basic service is free, but the company hopes users will get the paid version to support the service and keep it running. The paid accounts are Proton’s only source of income, which, unlike other mail services, says it does not want to earn money from advertisements.
