9to5Google: Upcoming Pixel tablet should take over Google Nest Hub functions

The next Google Pixel tablet may take over or even replace the functionalities of the current Nest Hub. For example, Google’s tablet would get a docking function and the screen would automatically turn on when someone comes close.

Google announced in May a new Android-powered tablet without divulging further details, but 9to5Google reports based on references in Android code that the product becomes more than a conventional tablet. In the code, the medium found references to “Google Dock”, which allows the Pixel tablet to be linked to a central hub. Once connected, the tablet can be charged and possibly also serve as a smart speaker.

Furthermore, Android code refers to the use of ultrasonic sound waves for detecting the user. This feature is already present in current Nest Hubs; the distance from the user to the device is measured by means of the length of reflected sound waves. This way, the Nest Hub’s screen turns on automatically when the user is nearby, but it also allows the hub to dynamically adjust the font size for the user. It is not clear whether the Pixel tablet will also be equipped with this specific function.

Finally, 9to5Google speculates that the Nest Hub-esque look of the tablet and the sleep features found in the Google Health Studies app all point to an integration of Nest Hub features into the upcoming tablet. Google plans to release the Pixel tablet in 2023.
