86,000 people claimed compensation for Apple butterfly keyboard

All objections to the settlement of approximately 49 million euros over Apple’s controversial butterfly keyboard have been rejected by the federal judge in California. During that ruling it was also announced that 86,000 people were entitled to compensation.

A total of six users attempted to challenge Apple’s settlement, writes Reuters. For example, one person felt that the $125 compensation that users receive who have had an entire keyboard replaced was insufficient, because replacing the keyboard would have cost more. Some others called it unfair that users who also suffered from a defective keyboard, but did not have it replaced, are now not entitled to compensation. However, the judge rejects all objections and officially approves the settlement.

In July last year, Apple agreed to pay approximately 49 million euros to American customers who purchased a MacBook with a butterfly keyboard, one or more parts of which had to be replaced. The maximum estimated compensation per individual is approximately €386, for users who have had multiple entire keyboards replaced.

Since then, more than 86,000 consumers have claimed compensation, the judge has now announced. That is approximately 11 percent of the total number of users who would be entitled to compensation. The deadline ended last March. Since very few objections have been submitted relative to the volume of claims, the judge assumes that it is a ‘fair, adequate and reasonable’ deal. Now that the settlement has been officially approved, Apple can begin paying out the compensation.
