The music industry in the United States will receive 84 percent of its revenue from music streaming by 2022. That says the umbrella organization for the American music industry RIAA. Physical sales account for 11 percent of sales.

The share of streaming is therefore slightly higher than in 2021, when 83 percent of revenues came from it. writes RIAA. Downloads of songs and albums also accounted for 3 percent of revenue.

Within streaming, the turnover from paid subscriptions continues to increase. Of the $13.2 billion the music industry made from streaming, $9.1 billion came from paid subscriptions to streaming services. Ad-supported streaming services accounted for the most revenue next with $1.8 billion.

The income from physical media is largely dwarfed by this. Vinyl overtook CDs in 2022. In the US, 41.3 million records were sold in 2022, compared to 33.4 million CDs. In 2021, 46.7 million CDs were still sold. In 2020, more records were sold than CDs.
