‘3D Touch in iPhone XS Max screen works with fewer components than in iPhone X’

Apple has saved on components for 3D Touch in screens for the iPhone XS Max. TechInsights claims that based on its own teardown and analysis of the device. The functionality of 3D Touch is the same.

In total, it saves Apple about ten dollars on the material costs for the iPhone XS Max, writes TechInsights. It seems that Apple has managed to integrate the functionality with fewer components. Despite the likely decrease in costs of 3D Touch, the technology is not on the iPhone XR, which will be released next month. The XR is the first new Apple smartphone without 3D Touch since the iPhone SE in early 2016. Many of the functions that users of other devices can access with 3D Touch are available to the XR by long-pressing the screen.

The XS Max’s OLED screen is a few dollars more expensive than last year’s iPhone X, claims TechInsights. The research bureau has not yet taken care of the XS. It is still unknown who produced the screen.

TechInsights also found out that the primary camera on the back comes from Sony, just like previous years. The analysis supports the claim that there are more focus pixels on the sensor. The Apple A12-soc has a die size of about 83 square millimeters, making it 5 percent smaller than the A11. Apple has the A12 made at 7nm, as opposed to the A11’s 10nm.

TechInsights estimates the total cost of materials for the phone at $443, about $50 more than the iPhone X. TechInsights’ 256GB version costs $1,249. In addition to material costs, the manufacturer also incurs costs for developing the device, assembly, storage and transport and other costs such as marketing and distribution. TechInsights does not venture an estimate of the margin on the XS Max. Apple released the iPhone XS and XS Max last week.
