3D Realms changes name of retro shooter Ion Maiden after Iron Maiden indictment
3D Realms has renamed its retro shooter Ion Maiden to Ion Fury after claims of trademark infringement by metal band Iron Maiden. The 1.0 version of the Early Access game will be released on August 15 for Windows and Linux.
Without further explanation, 3D Realms reports that Ion Maiden will now go through life as Ion Fury and will appear on August 15th. At the end of May of this year, it emerged that the metal band Iron Maiden had sued 3D Realms for trademark infringement of the name ‘Iron Maiden’ and the logo of this name with the well-known font. The band already had this registered in 1984, Polygon wrote at the end of May. Iron Maiden claimed more than $2 million in damages.
It is unknown what the status of this case is now that 3D Realms has changed the name of the game. Ion Maiden has been available on Steam as an Early Access game since February 2018. Ion Fury is an fps in the spirit of Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior, made with the Build engine that Duke Nukem 3D is also based on. The game revolves around Shelly ‘Bombshell’ Harrison taking on Dr. Jadus Heskel. It’s the successor to 2016’s Bombshell, which 3D Realms originally wanted to release as a Duke Nukem game, but couldn’t because it sold the rights to Gearbox.
