AMD has announced that it is immediately switching to the 7nm process for its second-generation Epyc server processors. The manufacturer says it has a working chip in its lab and will send out samples later this year. Epyc 2 should be released next year.

AMD skips the 12nm process for the server processors and immediately opts for the new Zen 2 architecture for the second generation. Current Epyc processors, which are available with up to 32 cores, are made at 14nm.

AMD has not yet disclosed details about core numbers, clock speeds or specific models and features. AMD CEO Lisa Su says the company has a working chip in his lab made on the new process. The first customers will receive samples in the second half of this year.

The server processors made at 7nm should be available sometime next year. It is not yet clear when they will be on the market in 2019. AMD announced the news about its Epyc processors in a presentation at the Computex trade show in Taiwan, where a Vega GPU at 7nm was also demonstrated and Threadripper 2 was announced.
