1Password will launch passkeys for passwordless authentication in the summer
1Password will support passkeys from the summer of this year to enable passwordless authentication. The company behind the password manager indicated last year that this support would become available ‘early 2023’.
1Password sets that the forthcoming support for passkeys couldn’t come at a better time, with the company pointing out that attacks based on someone’s credentials are only becoming more common and that in 2022 it was rare for a month to go by without a known service or identity being revealed. had a successful attack. In November last year, the company said support for passkeys would follow early this year; the company doesn’t say why that has apparently been delayed until the summer.
Passkeys can replace passwords by working with unique digital keys that are stored locally on a device. 1Password says that the passkeys are based on the same security foundation as the secretkey, without requiring a password. The feature is supported on multiple platforms, between which passkeys can be synchronized.
In May last year, passkeys were introduced by the FIDO Alliance. The feature should replace passwords with the authentication of a device itself, such as Face ID on iPhones or fingerprint scanning.
